What a Design Reference Mission Actually Is

A Design Reference Mission (DRM) is a structured set of representative mission scenarios that collectively bound the design space for a spacecraft or complex system. It is not a single predicted mission profile, and it is not a requirements document. It sits between stakeholder intent and formal requirements — a translation layer that converts “what we need to accomplish” into “what the system must be capable of surviving or performing.”

The word reference is doing significant work in that name. A DRM is not a commitment to fly a specific trajectory on a specific date. It is a deliberate selection of scenarios chosen because, taken together, they drive the hardest design decisions. A deep space habitat DRM might include a conjunction-class Mars transit, a free-return abort, and an extended surface stay — not because all three will happen on one mission, but because each one drives different subsystem requirements that would otherwise go unconstrained.

This is the core engineering function of a DRM: to make the design space finite and tractable without prematurely over-constraining the architecture.


From Stakeholder Needs to DRM Scenarios

DRMs do not emerge from engineering analysis alone. They are derived from the intersection of stakeholder needs, mission objectives, and operational concepts (ConOps).

The process typically works in three passes:

First pass — mission objectives decomposition. Mission owners and stakeholders articulate what success looks like across the full mission lifecycle: science return, crew safety margins, commercial service levels, or national capability thresholds. These are not yet engineering requirements; they are intent statements. The systems engineering team translates them into candidate mission modes: nominal operations, degraded operations, emergency scenarios, and margin cases.

Second pass — ConOps alignment. The ConOps document defines how the system will be operated by humans — ground controllers, crew, mission operators — across each mission phase. DRM scenarios must be consistent with the ConOps. A DRM that assumes autonomous rendezvous and docking while the ConOps assigns that function to a ground team will generate contradictory requirements downstream. The two documents must be co-developed, not written sequentially.

Third pass — bounding scenario selection. From the full set of candidate scenarios, the team selects the subset that actually drives design decisions. This is a deliberate engineering judgment, not an exhaustive list. A scenario that duplicates the design stresses of another without adding new constraints is dropped. The goal is the smallest set of scenarios that produces the complete set of design-driving requirements.

A well-constructed DRM typically includes:

  • A nominal mission scenario — the primary operational case the system is designed to accomplish
  • One or more off-nominal or abort scenarios — cases that bound the safety envelope
  • A maximum performance scenario — the case that drives the upper limits of propulsion, power, thermal, or data capacity
  • A minimum performance scenario — often the longest or most resource-constrained case, which drives mass and consumables margins
  • Environmental extremes — worst-case radiation, thermal environments, micrometeorite flux, or atmospheric conditions depending on the mission domain

How DRMs Drive Requirements

Once the DRM scenarios are established, the requirements derivation process can begin. Each scenario is analyzed to identify what the system must do, survive, or achieve in that context. Those functional and performance constraints become the seed requirements that flow down to subsystem level.

This is where the DRM earns its keep. Without reference scenarios, requirements tend to accumulate from analogy — copied from prior programs, inherited from standards documents, or estimated by individual subsystem engineers without a unifying mission context. The result is a requirements set that may be internally consistent but disconnected from actual mission drivers. You end up with requirements that nobody can explain the origin of and margins that nobody can justify.

With a DRM, each top-level requirement should be traceable to a specific scenario and a specific performance threshold derived from that scenario. If a power subsystem is required to deliver 14 kW continuous for 72 hours, that number should come from a named DRM scenario — the extended eclipse case during polar orbit insertion, for instance — not from engineering intuition.

This traceability chain — DRM scenario → mission function → system requirement → design solution — is the spine of disciplined spacecraft systems engineering. It is also the most commonly broken chain in practice, which is why late-cycle design surprises are still endemic in complex programs.


How DRMs Evolve With Design Maturity

A DRM developed at program formulation is not the same document that exists at Preliminary Design Review (PDR) or Critical Design Review (CDR). DRMs are living artifacts that evolve as the design matures and as mission understanding improves.

In early phases (pre-Phase A and Phase A in NASA terminology), the DRM is deliberately broad. Scenarios are parameterized rather than fixed. The 2026 launch window is a candidate, not a commitment. The surface stay duration is “60 to 90 days” rather than “74 days.” This breadth is intentional — it preserves architectural flexibility while still providing enough constraint to make meaningful design trades.

As the design progresses into Phase B and Phase C/D, scenarios are progressively converged. Trajectory parameters are fixed to specific launch opportunities. Performance thresholds are tightened based on actual subsystem capability demonstrated in analysis and test. The DRM becomes less of a bounding exercise and more of a validation checklist: does our current design satisfy every scenario we committed to?

The failure mode to watch for is premature convergence — locking scenario parameters before the design has the fidelity to justify them. A DRM that commits to a specific trajectory at Concept Review forces the propulsion team to design to a point solution before the trajectory analysis is mature enough to support it. This creates rework when the trajectory changes.

The other failure mode is the opposite: DRM scenarios that never converge, leaving requirements perpetually open-ended because “the mission hasn’t been defined yet.” Neither extreme serves the engineering team.


DRMs in NASA Programs

NASA has used DRMs formally since at least the Constellation program era, and the concept reaches back further in informal practice to Apollo and Viking mission planning. The most publicly documented examples come from the Human Exploration programs.

NASA’s Mars DRM series — versions 1.0 through 5.0 — represents one of the most thorough public examples of DRM practice at program scale. Each version defines the mission architecture as a set of scenarios: Earth departure, transit, Mars orbit insertion, surface operations, ascent, and Earth return. The DRM is used to evaluate competing architectures — chemical propulsion vs. nuclear thermal, surface nuclear power vs. solar — against a common set of mission scenarios, which makes the trades defensible.

For robotic science missions, DRMs are often less formally structured but serve the same function. The science operations scenarios define the data volume, downlink cadence, and power cycling that drive instrument and avionics design. The fault response scenarios drive the autonomy and fault protection architecture.


Commercial Space and the Compressed DRM

Commercial space companies — particularly those operating on 18-to-36-month development cycles — have not abandoned the DRM concept, but they have adapted it. Where a NASA flagship program might spend twelve to eighteen months developing and validating a DRM before requirements baselining, a commercial small satellite operator may compress the equivalent process into a four-week architecture sprint.

The core logic is unchanged: identify the scenarios that drive design decisions, derive requirements from those scenarios, trace the requirements to design solutions. What changes is the iteration cadence and the tolerance for scenario uncertainty.

Commercial programs often accept a narrower DRM — fewer scenarios, tighter mission definition — as the price of faster development. This is a legitimate trade-off for missions with well-understood mission types (imaging constellations, communications relay, technology demonstration). It becomes a liability when the mission type is novel and the DRM underspecifies the design space.

Some commercial teams have begun using parametric DRM frameworks — defining scenarios as ranges rather than point values, then using model-based simulation to sweep the design space — which allows them to capture DRM-level rigor without premature convergence. This is methodologically sound and increasingly tractable with modern tooling.


The Relationship Between a DRM and an Operational Concept

The DRM and the ConOps are frequently confused or conflated. They are distinct but interdependent.

The ConOps answers: how will humans interact with this system across its lifecycle? It defines roles, responsibilities, timelines, ground system interactions, crew procedures, and decision authority. It is primarily a document about people and processes.

The DRM answers: what must the system be capable of doing, in what environments, for how long, under what constraints? It is primarily a document about system performance envelopes.

The two must be consistent: a ConOps that specifies crew-operated rendezvous requires a DRM scenario that bounds the time-on-task and performance thresholds for that crew function. A DRM scenario that assumes continuous autonomous surface operations requires a ConOps that assigns oversight authority and defines the intervention protocol.

In practice, the ConOps tends to be developed by mission operators and crew systems engineers; the DRM tends to be developed by systems architects and trajectory analysts. Keeping these two communities synchronized — especially as both documents evolve — is an organizational challenge as much as a technical one.


The traceability gap between DRM scenarios and formal requirements is real and persistent.
