Is Model-Based Systems Engineering Worth the Investment for a 50-Person Hardware Company?

Short answer: the concept, yes. The formal implementation that comes to mind when you hear “MBSE,” probably not.

The question isn’t whether the promise is real. The question is whether the implementations designed to deliver it are appropriate for your team.


Why Formal SysML Is Not the Right Answer at Your Scale

If standing up and maintaining a formal MBSE environment costs three months of an engineer’s focused attention — which is optimistic — you’ve spent 12% of a senior engineer’s year before a single engineer on your team has gotten any value from the model. Explicit relationships between artifacts. System requirements trace to subsystem requirements. Subsystem requirements trace to design decisions. Design decisions trace to tests. These links are first-class data in the system, not footnotes in a document. When something changes, you traverse the graph to find what’s affected. When a test fails, you traverse the graph to find the requirement it covers.

A model that lives where work happens. The single largest predictor of whether a requirements model stays current is how much friction there is to update it. If updating a requirement means opening a specialized tool, navigating a formal process, and touching a diagram, it won’t happen. If all three answers are yes, the investment is clear. If two are yes, it’s worth the time to evaluate. If one or zero, you may have more pressing process problems to solve first.
